I am still getting information from the zoo. They were supposed to fax me
their tours. Well, they did but there were 2 pages and they only sent me 1
of those pages (twice). Looks like as long as we have 15 or more people in
our group we will get a discount. I asked them about my Zoo discount and
she said the group discount is better than my County Employee discount. So we
will go with the Zoo group discount. It looks like they have a package
called "Inside Story" that might be of interest to us. This is what the zoo
says about the tour "this two-hour tour includes a private three-mile guided
bus tour, a visit to two off exhibit areas and unlimited stay on the grounds
for the remainder of the day. Your group will visit either the Zoo's Forage
Warehouse (to see what goes into feeding all of our animal residents every
day), an animal bedroom or a spot where you can meet an exotic animal
up-close." There is not a HIPPO Tour. We are trying to get that. The tour
cost is ADULTS $25.45 CHILD (3-11) $12.70. They also have a Meal & Snack
Voucher Program for groups of 15 or more. Cost for that is $11.25 per
person. I don't know if that would be necessary.
I think we will have to set up a meeting room with the hotel or maybe we can
get a couple of rooms that connect to meet at for trading and talking. We
could probably use their lobby or lounge area without extra cost. I am
trying to keep the cost down so that everyone will be able to go. I want
each and every one of you to meet me. And bring me a hippo to trade. Haha.
I think we should do the zoo on Saturday and the Wild Animal Park on Sunday.
There would be an additional cost for the Wild Animal Park. I have not been
there. But was told by the zoo, that they have hippos also.
Friday night we could all get together for dinner etc. Saturday do the zoo
and after it closes, we can get together as needed or desired. Mostly doing
this at the hotel or surrounding eateries. Same with Sunday. If people
want they can do their own side trips. So we will be somewhat structured and yet
flexible.
I think I can do badges for all. I will need to know who all is going etc.
But we have lots of time for that.
I will probably fly and rent a car once I get there. I can get a van and
will be happy to filler up whenever possible. (I keep saying I but I should
be saying we because my husband will be going too.)
I (not we) think I have covered almost everything. What do you think so
far?
Cathy

Hi Hippolotofus, (how cute). You don't know how often I hear that when
talking with the hotels and the zoo. Well, I am flying to San Diego this
weekend to stay at the Handlery. That is at this point my first pick. I am
going to try and look at three others, Best Western 7 Seas, Holiday Inn in
Old Town, and Inn Suites. I have called the zoo today also. They will be
sending me a contract to sign for our zoo visit. We are set for May 6, 2000
at 9:30 am. I am very glad I called because they did not save anything from
when I called in June. So we are now booked. We are going to have an Inside
Story tour which lasts for two hours. The zoo will try to include something
behind the scenes for us to see the hippos. The cost will be $25.45 for
adults and children 3-11 are $12.70. This includes all day at the zoo and of
course the tour. I did not make reservations for any catering. I thought we
had decided to be on our own for eating. This is what I have going for now.
I will see you later. I will say hi to the baby for all of you.

1. ZOO NEWS: I called the zoo because I had yet to receive the contract for
our behind the scenes tour. The last time I spoke with Tracy, she said she
was sending the contract. I must have misunderstood. We will get the
contract sometime in March 2000. Hopefully by then, we will have an
accurate count.
2. INN SUITES NEWS: I called Michelle (@ Inn Suites) and told her she was
the winner. She was very excited. Remember, this is the gal that loved
hippos too. She goes to the zoo a lot and every time I call she gives me a
baby update. So be sure to ask her about the baby.
Since I had 20 "confirmed" rooms, I booked 30 rooms for us. If we
discover that many more want to go, I can call and increase. However, they
are getting booked up already. The nice thing about that was they were
running low on singles. So if you want a single, be sure to call as soon as
you can to insure you get a single. But, here comes the nice part, when all
the singles are gone, they will upgrade you to a double. Now you are saying
big deal. The doubles she is talking about are all what she called "pool
side" and these rooms were $10.00 more per night. She said that she would
give us those rooms for $74.00 also. So I am thinking just ask for a double
and make sure the price is $74.00. You might get the upgraded room.
I have decided to get a 2 room suite. This will hold approximately 20
people in the living room. If we get more rooms than 30 we might get a free
meeting room. But we have to fill all the rooms in order to get the free
meeting room. That's why I am getting a 2 room suite, we can have our
meetings there. I don't suppose we really need a Convention Center room.
She will try to put us close to each other. So I am thinking Friday night
might be party in Cathapotamus' room. The zoo trip is first thing Saturday
morning. So maybe we will "party" again on Saturday or Sunday even. You
can add a day to the beginning and/or to the end of our weekend for the same
price. So May 4th thru May 8th is available to us at the same $74.00 room
rate. Once I receive the contract with all the details on booking rooms
etc. I will email again with that information and I also have a toll free phone
number that you can use to book your room.
3. CONVENTION CENTER: Since we are now booked into our choice of hotels,
the convention center will be contacting me regarding discount coupons,
T-shirts, and other exciting things. I will let you know when I know what that
includes.
Stu, I probably don't even need to ask, but please add this updated email to
your convention page. Thanks
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. If I don't already know the
answer, I will contact San Diego and get back to the group.
I will be booking my air fare soon. Southwest Airlines has $39 one way
tickets anywhere they fly. I will be looking there first.
I will also be renting a van. So even though the hotel has a shuttle
service to the zoo, their (1) van only holds 8. It will take many trips to get each
and every one of us to the zoo. So someone can right will me. As long as
you tip in hippos. haha
Well, I think this is enough for now.

We are confirmed for 30 rooms at the Inn Suites in San Diego. You can
arrive/depart anytime from May 4th (Thursday) and May 9th (Tuesday) at the
same rate of $74.00 per night. You must make your own reservations. They
must be made at least 30 days before our first booking date. All you need to
do is call (619) 296-2101 and tell them you are with the Hippolotofus group
and want to book your room. You will need to find your own transportation to
and from the hotel. Now getting to the zoo might be different. A lot of us
will have cars/vans so you should be able to get to the zoo easy enough. We
also have a package for the zoo. I have a list of people that have already
told me they were going to the Convention. If you want, I can publish my
list. If we go over 30, it is okay, but I need to let the hotel know because
they are running out of rooms. I have about 25 rooms already booked. What
else can I tell you? Either email me direct or do it through onelist. I
will be booking my room soon but am waiting until I can book my flight. I
plan on getting in early on Friday and staying a couple of nights at least.
I will get a suite and we can meet there when necessary.

So talk to me.
